Final Blog Entry

Your final blog entry for the semester will be in two parts:

1. Look back over your own work for this class. What did you learn that you think is important or useful? Please give specific examples from your blog entries.

2. Pick one blog entry from a class mate (either class) that you found particularly valuable. Describe what your classmate did and why you find it interesting or etc.

(Yeah I posted the directions/blog assignment and what!?)

Throughout my English 102 class I feel that I have learned a great many things as well as reintroduced some of my old writing habits. I've also met a couple of great people in this class. I originally only had the intention of going back to school to try and meet people and hopefully meet someone special. Yet this is slowly starting to change and I feel it might be very beneficial to me to obtain a degree as well as meet someone. I currently only have IT certifications (A+, Net+, MCP, MCSA, and MCSE) and I'm employed at the United Nations because of them.

A few examples of what I have learned in this class can be seen from my posts. I think I have improved greatly on my analytical skills as well as my writing skills.  I also learned about archetypes and monomythic heroes/structures.  In my blog posts 2.1 and 2.2 I learned about archetypes.  Previously I didn't really know anything about it nor did I know anything of Joseph's Campbell famous book The Hero of a Thousand Faces.  In blog entry 3.1, I had to write about details of what I saw in a picture.  I never really put that much thought into a picture before this class and even now I'm starting to look at certain photos or ads on the subway.  I'm looking at them from a different perspective than before and starting to see things I didn't notice.

Of All the blogs that I read of my former classmates, I must say that I would have to go with Era/Ira's final project that is titled Mistifiq Action in Progress.  A quick sum of it is a college student going through freshmen orientation or a "treasure hunt". I must admit, I think this is very beneficial to ANY student that is attending a college to go through something like this.  It gets them familiar with all the areas of the school and they learn where everything is.  It also helps set them up for success rather than for failure.  People don't plan to fail, they only fail to plan.  I know when I first entered college life years ago I was completely lost.  I didn't meet up with a guidance counselor till I was getting kicked out of school.  Looking back on it now, I only wish I knew then what I know now.

I'm very thankful for getting back in school.  I believe money invested in an education is never a waste.  I look forward to continuing my education over here at Laguardia.  Hopefully I will continue having good luck in getting good Professors such as Dr. C. Jason Smith.  This will probably be my last blog entry for the semester and most likely for this class.

102 Supernatural Project

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzqlGLPhcdY

The shaman class is one of the few hybrid classes in the game (World of Warcraft.) It can be either a damage dealing class or a healing class. One of the things that separates the Shaman class from the other classes is the use of totems, which no other class has. If a player chooses to be of the damage varity, they have a choice of being ranged or melee. The ranged versions cast offensives spells that are elemental while the melee focuses on hand to hand combat. Whichever a player chooses both are very effective if used right. If a player decides to choose the healing role for the shaman the majority of spells they'll be using will be healing related. No matter the role the player chooses, the shaman class is one of the most versatile classes in the game.

From the Lore perspective:
The shamans are in touch with the elements in the world. These elements consists of earth, fire, air, and water. They are also in tune with the spirits and are able to talk to the dead. When the shamans call upon help of the elements, they pray and if the cause is just, the elements will lend their powers to the shaman. The use of the totems can be considered a monomythic figure and the elements can be considered the supernatural aid.

Blog 4.1: Project Update

Project update:

1. Picking a video recording software. (hopefully one that my pc will handle.)
Will be using FRAPS to record images/on screen game footage.

2. Selecting a class.
Shaman class will be used. It best fits the super natural part of the course.

3. Making a character. (name, looks, and epicness)

4. Explaining the game and the class that was selected. Possibly having some written material that can be read to the viewer about the video or the lore behind it.

5. Some game play footage.

6. End game play footage. (optional)

7. Will be using Windows Movie maker to cut, paste, crop, and modify game play footage.

8. Review footage and make necessary changes as see fit.

9. Show others for response/reaction.

10. Submit.

I recorded a couple of scenes  using FRAPS program from the game, you can find fraps. (http://www.fraps.com) Some of the scenes consisted of group play and others of solo play.  I originally organized all the scenes that I wanted using Windows Movie maker.  I then recorded all the scenes while playing the scenes in Windows Media player.  (FRAPS records any real time video footage or any games using direct X) This was the time that I recorded my voice play in the video using FRAPS again.  I then imported all the scenes into Windows Movie maker and then added the audio track.  The audio track that I used is called Savannah.  The song can be found in most tankspot videos done by Ciderhelm.  You can find Savannah on http://www.neosounds.com/  Total completion of the project took about 3-4 hours.

Blog Entry 3.5 Coraline - Hero's Quest

In his seminal work The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell identified the typical elements of the hero’s journey. In the novel Coraline, by Neil Gaiman there consists of many elements of what Campbell was referring too. In short, Coraline consisted a hero, a call to adventure, supernatural aid, a transformation of the main character, trials and tribulations for the main character, a revelation, atonement, and the return. All of these things make up the hero’s journey.

The following elements can be identified in Coraline. Coraline starts out like an average 12 year old girl in Europe. She just recently moved into a new flat with her parents. Later in the novel, Coraline ends up having a cup of tea with Ms Spink and Ms. Forcible, she is then given a magical stone as well as having her fortune read to her. (supernatural aid + calling to adventure p23, p25) Coraline then decides to go through the door that leads to no where. She discovers a world that is very much like her own, but slightly different. Along her journey, she runs into a black cat that can talk (a helper and mentor p43) while in the other world. After Coraline has spent some time in the closet, she is then determined to save her parents along with the other children that were there who have died. (transformation, death and rebirth p97-100) Coraline then decides to make a bet with the other mother about saving her parents as well as the other three children that are locked up in the mirror/closet. (atonement) Coraline ends up saving the children, her parents, as well as the cat who that ended up helping her and brings them back home. (the return p157-162)

As readers, the hero’s journey helps us to understand novels better. I think if a perfect Hero were created, it might not be able to catch the eye of the reader or the readers interest. In a specific part in Coraline, Coraline is there in the closet sitting down, I think it’s at this point it becomes obvious that in certain cases or in some way or another she has failed in saving her parents. People try and do things in life and sometimes it doesn’t always works out. I think it’s ok to fail as long as you put some effort into what ever it is that you’re doing and this is why it is part of the hero’s journey, it’s ok to fail.

I think the reason why us as readers should care about the hero’s journey is that it helps people understand, mature, and evolve into a better person or at least a better human being. It helps build morals for others. In the beginning of Coraline, Coraline was a little annoying brat, she always wanted attention or to be entertained. At the end of the novel, she ends up becoming a completely different person. She also comes to the realisation of what she has and in turn ends up becoming grateful for having them.

Blog Entry 3.3

I'm not entirely sure on what I should do for my research project. It will most definitely be something relating to WoW (World of Warcraft). I'm debating on whether to do a Wiki or a video for it. The video would probably consist of me playing and maybe having some fight scenes of things you can do in the game. My biggest concern is whether it will be enjoyable to those who view it.

Edit:
So, I have decided to do a turtorial on a character creation for WoW. The turtorial will probably go into details about the game, the lore behind it, the magic and monsters involved, and as well as the structure of the class that I choose.

Edit 2: if it wasn't obvious I'll be going with the video research. =)

Macbeth Entry 3.2 Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irIPrZ4ulPQ

The video above is of Shakespeare's Macbeth "Dinning Hall scene" by Polanski in 1971.  The scene consists of where Macbeth is in the dining hall and is addressing some of his subordinates.  He is there being treated like royalty and having his servants server him.  He is then addressed by one of his kinsmen and is offered to dine with them.  Macbeth seeing that there being no room for him respectably declines.  This is here his kinsmen points the error of Macbeth's judgment pointing out where there is a seat from him.  Macbeth doesn't not see this empty seat, but instead he sees a ghost of those who he has murdered.  I believe if he never took the road of murdering those he say, they might have been sitting in that seat if they were alive.

Macbeth in this scene is wearing a crown as well as a white garb.  The white garb symbolizes righteousness and purity. The crown symbolizes legitimacy, righteousness, victory, triumph, honor and glory.  Which in my point of view Macbeth robs himself of it by committing horrible deeds.  The deeds that he has committed are shown by the numbers of ghosts that appear in the scene.  Each ghost is someone who he has killed.  These ghosts also server as a reminder to Macbeth of what he has done.

I choose this scene because it was one of the few things in Macbeth that had some supernatural elements.  Other than the 3 witches I can't really recall any other supernatural elements in Macbeth.

Macbeth Entry 3.1 Photo

Every time I think of Macbeth, I always think of the cartoon character above.  The photo is from the cartoon called Gargoyles and while the story of Macbeth is slightly different in the cartoon, the out come is the same.  Macbeth is sitting on the throne and he has just been crowned King.
The throne is a symbol of power, anyone who sits in it other then the king would be almost like wearing the crown.  The crown is also symbol of power as well, it symbolizes legitimacy, righteousness, victory, triumph, honor and glory.  It's very ironic that a crown can mean all these things and yet Macbeth acquired it by not following it.  He doesn't deserve the right to wear the crown nor be addressed by those titles he has received.  He is also wearing a white garb, which would symbolize righteousness and purity.  You can also see the hilt of the sword on his side.  A sword symbolizes many things, it can symbolize aggression, protection, courage, strength, action, unity, justice and leadership.  It is also use to dub people or give them certain ranks such as knight-hood.  Macbeth is also depicted of having a beard.  Beards can symbolize dignity and wisdom

2.2: Innocent/Orphan.

I'm doing some searching on my archetype.  I didn't really have any ideas or thoughts on what an innocent or an orphan archetype would be.  As I read up on it, I had some likely candidates.  After a well thought out idea I'ved decided that the perfect Innocent/Orphan would be none other than Naruto Uzumaki. (or in Japanese Uzumaki Naruto)

The story of Naruto is that he is an orphan, his mother died at birth and his father died fighting a nine tailed fox demon.  He grows up in a village where he is hated by everyone and he strives for recognition. Whether it be good or bad, as long as he gets acknowledged or accepted he's happy.  Through out the story, Naruto makes strong bonds with some of the people from his village and he goes all out for them if any one of them is in trouble.

I choose this image because I like the way it looks.  It's Naruto in his PJs.  Shows how much of a kid he is because he's still half asleep.  He also has that childish napping hat on, which I for one kinda wish I had as well.  I think everyone has a child in them.  I forget what the sleeping hat is called, but he also carries a wallet he calls gama-chan.

2.1: Symbolism and Archetypes Goblin's market.

2.1: Symbolism and Archetypes Goblin's Market.

1. Look up information about Christina Rossetti and "Goblin Market" on the web and tell us a little bit about her and the poem in your own words.
2. Write out the complete plot.
3. Discuss the patterns or types of symbols you found in the poem, what you think Rossetti wanted her readers to get from the symbols, and give relevant examples from the poem and indicate line numbers.
4. Identify and discuss any archetypes you find in the poem. What are they? What makes you think they are archetypes?  What do you think they mean?
5. Conclude with what you think the poem is "really about". This should be YOUR response to the poem.

In literature, there are  many poets and writers.  One writer in particular is Christina Rossetti.  Christina Rossetti was born in December 1830 and died in December 1894, she was 64 years old.  She is an English poet known for writing poems.  She is most famous for the long, lengthy, and odd poem the Goblin Market.
The Goblin Market, is about sibling love or more importantly, love between sisters.  In the poem, there are three girls mentioned, Laura, Lizzie, and Jeanie with Jeanie being deceased.  The poem starts off with Laura and Lizzie out near a brook.  Laura then gets lured with by the sound of goblin men selling fruit, her sister Lizzie, gives her warnings and to not deal or interact with them due to what happened to Jeanie.  Laura waves the warnings by, and goes to meet the goblins and is then poisoned by them.  Later in the poem Laura finds out that after tasting the fruit from the goblins, she can no longer hear them or see them.  Laura starts to long for the fruit from the goblins and starts to get weak.  It becomes apparent to Lizzie that her sister is getting sicker and sicker due to not being able to eat the goblin fruit.  Lizzie ends up saving her sister Laura by going to meet up with the goblins and eventually makes them mad and they start to throw food at her as well as beat her up.  She then runs home and tells Laura about it.  Lizzie tells her to lick all the juices fruit off of her, because she's soaked with it from when the goblins threw fruit at her.  Laura does and gets well again and they both live old enough to have kids of their own and to be able to tell tales of them.
Some of the most common symbols in the Goblin Market are or were fruits, goblins, and maids.  Fruit(lines 5-29) usually symbolizes temptation and on another level can also symbolize infidelity as well as sin.  The fact that Laura had some fruit from the goblins goes to show that she wasn't able to hold back her temptation.  Goblins are usually depicted as green little men or women that usually have some kind of angle in any deal or transaction that they make.  The fact that they received payment from Laura with only a golden lock of hair(Line 125) and a tear that came down her face that is valued as a pearl (line 129) shows that they're willing to accept anything as payment.  Rossetti described Laura and Lizzie as maids, to me this would symbolize some kind of purity they are also both compared to flowers.  Rossetti also goes into detail about how they look and the bonds of sister hood that they have.
The archetypes in the Goblin Market are Laura, Lizzie, and goblin men.  Since Laura gave in her temptation of having forbidden fruit, she can be identified with Eve.  She can also be identified as being a prostitute seeing as she'll sell parts of her body as well as being a child for giving into her foolish mistakes.. Lizzie ends up saving Laura, this in turn makes Lizzie a hero.  Lizzie also gave warnings to Laura about not getting involved with goblin men, she is viewed as a lot wiser than Laura is.  I'd view the goblin men as more of a trickster than anything else, they could be related to the snake in the story of Adam and Eve.
I use to think that the goblin market was about a girl who was in love with her sister, but after hearing the audio version and reading it or following along with the reader, I came to another conclusion.  I think the poem more relates about sibling love or at least receiving attention from someone who you love, look up too or admire.

Blog Entry 1.3 Poetry Symbolism

Assignment:

For your third blog entry this semester, you should:

1.Research for and choose a poem (or song, or a portion of a longer poem or song) that fits the theme of the course
2.Introduce the poem and the author with relevant biographical information.
3.Identify/list all the symbols/symbolic actions in the poem in the order they appear.
4.Define the denotative meaning of the symbols using a dictionary and/or dictionary of symbols.
5.Attempt to interpret the poem (find meaning or the "theme") using the connotative meaning of the symbols in the poem, or what they mean in context (again, in the order they appear in the poem).
6.List all the sources you used at the end.

Symbolism is found in many different types of poetry as well as some modern day songs. One song that I found of particular interest is the song called The Wicked End off of the City of Evil album by the band Avenged Sevenfold. The band consists of four members, they are named M. Shadow, Johnny Christ, Zacky Vengence, and Synyster Gates.  The type of genre they play is considered metal core, but this album is considered heavy metal.  The song The Wicked End  is about the end of the world or more importantly the end of man. The song also goes into more detail of the last day of man and the return of Jesus Christ.
The first verse of the song goes and describes how modern day man is, he is very wicked, soulless, and has pretty much lost his way with God.  In this verse, there is a reference to Mary's Word, meaning the word of god and the return of Christ.  The verse also mentions that there is chastisement and the flood has already happened.  Since the cleansing of the world is happening, it also is time to let others know that the end is drawing near.
The second and forth verse are a little repetitive, with the forth adding only a few extra lines.  In the second verse, he talks about prophecy and asks to shed some light on it.  I kinda find this to be a little ironic because a prophecy is something that is foretold and asking to shed some light on it is like asking to see the benefit of the world coming to an end.  The verse continues with man's survival and to feel sorrow for what little chance we have.  This verse also goes into the lies of man and a stab in the dark at anyone of us will wound our will to live.
The third verse of the song has one of the most symbolistic references in literature.  The reference is to the number six hundred sixty-six.  According to Wikipedia, this number refers to the number of the beast, it also has many other references, such as the name of the one who has yet to be identified can also be considered the anti-christ.  It also has the meaning that one who has been deemed imperfect by god.  In the song, this can be interpreted as a code, maybe a legion of angels or man who have turned against god and are now allied along the side of Lucifer.  It also carries the meaning of those who believe in god, those who say they believe and those who will be accepted by god.  There is also a debate of the way six hundred sixty-six is to be addressed.  The writing of it in 666 is actually incorrect and is suppose to be spelled out. Later in the verse, there is a mention of looking to the sky for knowledge, this can be interpreted as man looking for guidance or wisdom.  There is also a reference to the fall of heaven after an eclipse, I think this is where the actual war begins.
In the forth verse the first few lines are repeated from the second verse following the mention of an apple.  This is another very common symbol in literature, it shows the temptation of sin for man.  There is also a reference of Adam, and saying that Adam was right in biting into the apple, this is very to similar to opening up Pandora's box.  It can be interpreted that Adam's sin is now man's sin since man in general is a sinner.
I really enjoy listening to this song very much.  This is one of the very few songs that I listened too and listened to a lot.  Normally I do not try and read up on the song lyrics wise at least, because in some ways in ruins the song, because I end up knowing all the lyrics to it.  Also, I really like the way this song is written, I'm not a very religious person, but I enjoyed reading up on some of the symbols in the song.

Additional notes:

In my search for the meanings of six hundred sixty-six, I tried to search for meanings of 777 or Seven hundred sevenity-seven spelled out.  I could not find anything relating of it spelled out, but did find that 777 is deemed to be perfect by god, this number has been associated with angels.

Class Notes: 23rd Sept 2010

Notes for English class 102 - Supernatural. Below can be edited at any time.

Denotation - is often associated with symbolism, as the denotation of a particular media text often represents something further; a hidden meaning (or an Engima Code) is often encoded into a media text.

Connotation - is a subjective cultural and/or emotional coloration in addition to the explicit or denotative meaning of any specific word or phrase in a language, i.e. emotional association with a word.

Symbolism - is something such as an object, picture, written word, sound, or particular mark that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention.

"Entry 1.2: Internet Research"

Assignment
Pick something in the world of the supernatural that interests you. Research your subject on the web keeping tracks of the sites you used and why and what you found there. Write a blog entry on your blog summarizing what you were interested in and why and what you found and where. What did you learn that is interesting?

One of the many things that I consider supernatural are Dragons! Dragons are mythical or supernatural creatures in folklore. A few countries in the West as well as in the East make references to dragons. Growing up as a kid I often adored dragons, which is really the main reason why I choose this as my topic. In fact, one of my very first book reports was done on a book titled Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville. Dragons have not only played parts in lore, but they have also played parts in video games, card games, songs, cartoons, as well as books.

I watched a cartoon movie called The Flight of Dragons as a kid and is one of my favorite cartoon movies growing up. The movie is based off of a book with the exact same name written by Peter Dickinson. (I have yet to read this, but I will soon change this!) In the movie, the realm of magic is threaten by the realm of science. In order to save this realm and dragons along with it, the 3 of the 4 magic brothers had an idea to create a magic realm that was to be enclosed off to the rest of the world. The film also goes over a dragons physiology, the way dragons breathed fire, fly up in the air, and even why their skin is tough.

If you look at dragons from a lore or mythology point of view, a lot of them are portrayed as being evil or malevolent, at least according to the European myths. These dragons that are usually depicted as being evil, are often found guarding treasures. The Asian dragons seem to have different characteristics then the European ones, they come off a lot kinder and benevolent. The majority of them are often are associated with different forms of water.

Dragons are also involved in a lot of games, mostly MMORPGs (Massive Multi-Online Role Playing game) or MMOs for short. The ideas of MMOs are derived from Dungeons and Dragons. This basically consists of a group of players banding together to slay a dragon for "epic loot" in turn each player that helps or provides help is awarded DKP. (Dragon Kill Points) These points are usually spent on the items that dropped off of the dragon that was slain. DKP also helps with the distribution of items so in turn not one single player will be getting all the items.

Stories of these supernatural creatures have been around a long time. This is reflected in history and about almost every country has some kind of dragon related story. They are very popular among the gaming community and are probably consider part of popular culture. As long as there are kids in the world, we will have dragons.

This is me now.

I guess this is the part where I'm suppose to write stuff about myself.  Not to sure on what I would write, I'm not normally very good at writing things like this.  I am many things, I am a gamer, a clubber, a hard worker, a hermit, as well as student.  I just started taking classes again, feels like a really great experience to be in here.  I know if I weren't here I'd probably be home on my day off from work playing some computer game.

Edit:
This is my only class this term, my first term back in a CUNY school over a long period of time (2003) and I decided to go light with the classes considering I work full time, even then, the hours that I do work are very hectic and change every two months.  It's a nice job considering I only have my MCSE certification and how the economy currently is.

Edit2: Class assignments/homework can be found here. http://e102supernatural.blogspot.com/

Please note the above is subject to change.
