Final Blog Entry

Your final blog entry for the semester will be in two parts:

1. Look back over your own work for this class. What did you learn that you think is important or useful? Please give specific examples from your blog entries.

2. Pick one blog entry from a class mate (either class) that you found particularly valuable. Describe what your classmate did and why you find it interesting or etc.

(Yeah I posted the directions/blog assignment and what!?)

Throughout my English 102 class I feel that I have learned a great many things as well as reintroduced some of my old writing habits. I've also met a couple of great people in this class. I originally only had the intention of going back to school to try and meet people and hopefully meet someone special. Yet this is slowly starting to change and I feel it might be very beneficial to me to obtain a degree as well as meet someone. I currently only have IT certifications (A+, Net+, MCP, MCSA, and MCSE) and I'm employed at the United Nations because of them.

A few examples of what I have learned in this class can be seen from my posts. I think I have improved greatly on my analytical skills as well as my writing skills.  I also learned about archetypes and monomythic heroes/structures.  In my blog posts 2.1 and 2.2 I learned about archetypes.  Previously I didn't really know anything about it nor did I know anything of Joseph's Campbell famous book The Hero of a Thousand Faces.  In blog entry 3.1, I had to write about details of what I saw in a picture.  I never really put that much thought into a picture before this class and even now I'm starting to look at certain photos or ads on the subway.  I'm looking at them from a different perspective than before and starting to see things I didn't notice.

Of All the blogs that I read of my former classmates, I must say that I would have to go with Era/Ira's final project that is titled Mistifiq Action in Progress.  A quick sum of it is a college student going through freshmen orientation or a "treasure hunt". I must admit, I think this is very beneficial to ANY student that is attending a college to go through something like this.  It gets them familiar with all the areas of the school and they learn where everything is.  It also helps set them up for success rather than for failure.  People don't plan to fail, they only fail to plan.  I know when I first entered college life years ago I was completely lost.  I didn't meet up with a guidance counselor till I was getting kicked out of school.  Looking back on it now, I only wish I knew then what I know now.

I'm very thankful for getting back in school.  I believe money invested in an education is never a waste.  I look forward to continuing my education over here at Laguardia.  Hopefully I will continue having good luck in getting good Professors such as Dr. C. Jason Smith.  This will probably be my last blog entry for the semester and most likely for this class.

102 Supernatural Project

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzqlGLPhcdY

The shaman class is one of the few hybrid classes in the game (World of Warcraft.) It can be either a damage dealing class or a healing class. One of the things that separates the Shaman class from the other classes is the use of totems, which no other class has. If a player chooses to be of the damage varity, they have a choice of being ranged or melee. The ranged versions cast offensives spells that are elemental while the melee focuses on hand to hand combat. Whichever a player chooses both are very effective if used right. If a player decides to choose the healing role for the shaman the majority of spells they'll be using will be healing related. No matter the role the player chooses, the shaman class is one of the most versatile classes in the game.

From the Lore perspective:
The shamans are in touch with the elements in the world. These elements consists of earth, fire, air, and water. They are also in tune with the spirits and are able to talk to the dead. When the shamans call upon help of the elements, they pray and if the cause is just, the elements will lend their powers to the shaman. The use of the totems can be considered a monomythic figure and the elements can be considered the supernatural aid.

Blog 4.1: Project Update

Project update:

1. Picking a video recording software. (hopefully one that my pc will handle.)
Will be using FRAPS to record images/on screen game footage.

2. Selecting a class.
Shaman class will be used. It best fits the super natural part of the course.

3. Making a character. (name, looks, and epicness)

4. Explaining the game and the class that was selected. Possibly having some written material that can be read to the viewer about the video or the lore behind it.

5. Some game play footage.

6. End game play footage. (optional)

7. Will be using Windows Movie maker to cut, paste, crop, and modify game play footage.

8. Review footage and make necessary changes as see fit.

9. Show others for response/reaction.

10. Submit.

I recorded a couple of scenes  using FRAPS program from the game, you can find fraps. (http://www.fraps.com) Some of the scenes consisted of group play and others of solo play.  I originally organized all the scenes that I wanted using Windows Movie maker.  I then recorded all the scenes while playing the scenes in Windows Media player.  (FRAPS records any real time video footage or any games using direct X) This was the time that I recorded my voice play in the video using FRAPS again.  I then imported all the scenes into Windows Movie maker and then added the audio track.  The audio track that I used is called Savannah.  The song can be found in most tankspot videos done by Ciderhelm.  You can find Savannah on http://www.neosounds.com/  Total completion of the project took about 3-4 hours.

Blog Entry 3.5 Coraline - Hero's Quest

In his seminal work The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell identified the typical elements of the hero’s journey. In the novel Coraline, by Neil Gaiman there consists of many elements of what Campbell was referring too. In short, Coraline consisted a hero, a call to adventure, supernatural aid, a transformation of the main character, trials and tribulations for the main character, a revelation, atonement, and the return. All of these things make up the hero’s journey.

The following elements can be identified in Coraline. Coraline starts out like an average 12 year old girl in Europe. She just recently moved into a new flat with her parents. Later in the novel, Coraline ends up having a cup of tea with Ms Spink and Ms. Forcible, she is then given a magical stone as well as having her fortune read to her. (supernatural aid + calling to adventure p23, p25) Coraline then decides to go through the door that leads to no where. She discovers a world that is very much like her own, but slightly different. Along her journey, she runs into a black cat that can talk (a helper and mentor p43) while in the other world. After Coraline has spent some time in the closet, she is then determined to save her parents along with the other children that were there who have died. (transformation, death and rebirth p97-100) Coraline then decides to make a bet with the other mother about saving her parents as well as the other three children that are locked up in the mirror/closet. (atonement) Coraline ends up saving the children, her parents, as well as the cat who that ended up helping her and brings them back home. (the return p157-162)

As readers, the hero’s journey helps us to understand novels better. I think if a perfect Hero were created, it might not be able to catch the eye of the reader or the readers interest. In a specific part in Coraline, Coraline is there in the closet sitting down, I think it’s at this point it becomes obvious that in certain cases or in some way or another she has failed in saving her parents. People try and do things in life and sometimes it doesn’t always works out. I think it’s ok to fail as long as you put some effort into what ever it is that you’re doing and this is why it is part of the hero’s journey, it’s ok to fail.

I think the reason why us as readers should care about the hero’s journey is that it helps people understand, mature, and evolve into a better person or at least a better human being. It helps build morals for others. In the beginning of Coraline, Coraline was a little annoying brat, she always wanted attention or to be entertained. At the end of the novel, she ends up becoming a completely different person. She also comes to the realisation of what she has and in turn ends up becoming grateful for having them.

Blog Entry 3.3

I'm not entirely sure on what I should do for my research project. It will most definitely be something relating to WoW (World of Warcraft). I'm debating on whether to do a Wiki or a video for it. The video would probably consist of me playing and maybe having some fight scenes of things you can do in the game. My biggest concern is whether it will be enjoyable to those who view it.

Edit:
So, I have decided to do a turtorial on a character creation for WoW. The turtorial will probably go into details about the game, the lore behind it, the magic and monsters involved, and as well as the structure of the class that I choose.

Edit 2: if it wasn't obvious I'll be going with the video research. =)

Macbeth Entry 3.2 Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irIPrZ4ulPQ

The video above is of Shakespeare's Macbeth "Dinning Hall scene" by Polanski in 1971.  The scene consists of where Macbeth is in the dining hall and is addressing some of his subordinates.  He is there being treated like royalty and having his servants server him.  He is then addressed by one of his kinsmen and is offered to dine with them.  Macbeth seeing that there being no room for him respectably declines.  This is here his kinsmen points the error of Macbeth's judgment pointing out where there is a seat from him.  Macbeth doesn't not see this empty seat, but instead he sees a ghost of those who he has murdered.  I believe if he never took the road of murdering those he say, they might have been sitting in that seat if they were alive.

Macbeth in this scene is wearing a crown as well as a white garb.  The white garb symbolizes righteousness and purity. The crown symbolizes legitimacy, righteousness, victory, triumph, honor and glory.  Which in my point of view Macbeth robs himself of it by committing horrible deeds.  The deeds that he has committed are shown by the numbers of ghosts that appear in the scene.  Each ghost is someone who he has killed.  These ghosts also server as a reminder to Macbeth of what he has done.

I choose this scene because it was one of the few things in Macbeth that had some supernatural elements.  Other than the 3 witches I can't really recall any other supernatural elements in Macbeth.
